Preventing technical debt in long-running custom software applications

Make maintenance routine and visible

Technical debt becomes dangerous when upgrades, failing tests, slow queries, and fragile modules are known only through informal memory. A maintenance backlog should connect each issue to operational risk, user impact, and an achievable remediation step.

Small, regular dependency updates and refactors are easier to verify than infrequent platform-wide upgrades. Automated tests and production telemetry provide the confidence to make those changes safely.

Prioritize by evidence

Performance traces, incident history, change frequency, and defect concentration identify modules that deserve attention. Code that is imperfect but stable may be less urgent than a frequently changed workflow with weak tests.

A useful maintenance plan reserves capacity for security patches, reliability work, dependency upgrades, observability, and measured product improvements instead of treating every cycle as feature delivery only.
