Building reliable offline-first mobile workflows for field teams
How to manage local database sync, conflict resolution, and status queues when field technicians work in areas with intermittent connectivity.

Design offline behavior before screens
Field applications need a local source of truth for assigned work, captured evidence, and pending changes. Each action should have a durable local identifier and a visible sync state so technicians know whether information is saved locally, queued, or confirmed by the server.
The data model must distinguish records that can merge safely from records that require a deliberate conflict decision. Hiding those rules inside network code leads to silent overwrites and difficult support incidents.
Build recovery into the workflow
Retries should be bounded, idempotent, and observable. Failed media uploads, expired authentication, and partially completed jobs need clear recovery paths that do not force users to repeat completed work.
Testing should include interrupted uploads, clock differences, low storage, repeated submissions, app upgrades, and long periods without connectivity—not only the ideal online journey.
